Stephanie Cummings, a fifth grade English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher at Major George S. Welch Elementary School was recently awarded $400 as a winner of the Fifth Annual Hertrich Cash for Class competition. The award money will be used to support student’s interest in the popular Lego Robotics system. Lego Robotics is a great way to encourage students to learn about engineering and coding.
Creating a robot out of Legos and then bringing it to life will ignite curiosity and passion for engineering at a young age. Many students have a fixed mindset when thinking of math and science, because of the difficult concepts as they advance in the classroom. Therefore, showing students how math and science can be fun and innovative will spark interest and engagement and lead to more positive attitudes as they approach high school and career choices.
