Magnolia Middle School 8th Grade Teacher Gretchen Fox Awarded $1,000 from Hertrich Automobile Dealerships 4th Annual “Cash for Class” Program
Gretchen Fox, M.Ed., an 8th grade English Language Arts teacher at Magnolia Middle School, was recently awarded $1,000 as the winner of the 4th Annual Hertrich Cash for Class competition. The award money will be used to support the manga and anime reading library that Mrs. Fox maintains for all students at Magnolia Middle School.
The manga (graphic novels originating from Japan) and anime library has been successful in encouraging reading and increasing reading comprehension with the middle school students. A student club dedicated to the genre holds weekly meetings at Magnolia Middle School and has fundraising events to help support their activities. There are 90 students in the club currently.
“I couldn’t be more proud of Gretchen. She is a tremendous asset to our students at Magnolia Middle School, and I know this award money will be used to bring a fantastic return-on-investment for all the students here. If the interest her reading club has created so far is any indication, the program will certainly grow exponentially in the future,” explained Magnolia Middle School Principal Keith Wisher.
The Cash for Class program is sponsored by the Milford based Hertrich Family of Automobile Dealerships. To be eligible for the Cash for Class Award, educators from the eastern shore of Maryland or Kent and Sussex counties in Delaware must submit a short video in the fall describing the project they hope to be awarded funding for, as well as explaining how students will benefit.
