Supervisor of Instruction Darren Guido, Ed.D., Chosen as National Social Studies Supervisors Association 2021 “Leader of the Year”
Dr. Darren Guido, Supervisor of Instruction for the Caesar Rodney School District has recently been recognized by the National Social Studies Supervisors Association (NSSSA) as their 2021 Leader of the Year. First awarded in 1993, the NSSSA Mel Miller Outstanding Social Studies Leader Award is a prestigious annual recognition for educators who exemplify leadership qualities in the role of the Social Studies Supervisor. Dr. Guido was recognized at the December 14, Board of Education Meeting for his achievement.
The Leader of the Year Award is named after Mel Miller, a social studies supervisor from Michigan. Mr. Miller was a dedicated member of NSSSA and the Board of Directors, and a legendary contributor to the organization for many years. Following his death in September of 2006, the Board of Directors voted to rename the award in his honor.
The NSSSA Board of Directors established the Outstanding Social Studies Leader Award to recognize members who best exemplify the qualities of leadership in the field of Social Studies supervision. According to the organization a social studies supervisor is a subject matter specialist, a leader in program development, assists teachers in establishing individual professional growth plans, and utilize resources available on the local, state, and national levels to improve the effectiveness of the social studies program.
According to their website (www.nsssa.org/), the NSSSA - “promotes the common interest of social studies supervisors in instruction, curriculum materials, research, teacher training, and social action. Based on the belief that interaction between teachers and students is the most vital element of an education system, NSSSA encourages and assists in the development of social studies instruction”.
