Dear Family and Friends of Simpson Elementary,
Welcome to W.B. Simpson Elementary School – home of the Caesar Rodney Riders! Our school is named after William B. Simpson. He was the Superintendent of the Caesar Rodney School District from 1938-1961. W.B. Simpson Elementary is one of six elementary schools in the Caesar Rodney School District serving grades 1-5. W.B. Simpson continues to be a Delaware public elementary school serving the small towns of Camden and Wyoming. It is a true community school with a diverse population of approximately 600 students. The Kent County ILC also is part of W.B. Simpson Elementary. It serves about 50 students from the entire Kent County. This gives W.B. Simpson at total school population of approximately 650 students.
At Simpson, teachers in grades 2-3 and grades 4-5 loop with their students. That means that your child has the benefit of building a relationship with the same teacher and group of peers for two years, eliminating transitions, thus providing more time for targeted intervention and acceleration for those that need it.
W.B. Simpson was awarded as a Recognition School in 2013 for exceptional performance and/or closing the achievement gap. In addition, W.B. Simpson was recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan as a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School for meeting the criteria for Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing School. Although there is always room for improvement, we are meeting the federal and state proficiency targets for reading and mathematics.
Because of our dedicated staff and involved PTA, W.B. Simpson Elementary is a great place to grow and learn. W.B. Simpson is building a foundation as a Responsive Classroom school in which each classroom community starts the day with a Morning Meeting that sets a positive tone for learning, sets high expectations for teaching and learning through critical thinking, positive interaction and collaboration, and the recognition that social-emotional learning influences academic success. Each month, there is a kick-off assembly focusing on a C.A.R.E.S. characteristics of Cooperation, Assertiveness, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self-Control. School-wide expectations are then taught and reinforced by all staff members. The Responsive Classroom approach, in addition to our Positive Behavior Support (PBS) system, creates a safe and nurturing environment for all students.
W.B. Simpson also has many events that have become a school tradition. Family Involvement is promoted through Award Recognition Ceremonies, Literacy Night, Health Night, Grandparents Breakfast, Volunteer Appreciation Tea, and Parent Information Nights. Our Annual ACES Day and Field Days are time to celebrate athletic achievement and sportsmanship. Finally, Simpson staff offers a lot of extra-curricular clubs and activities including Girls on the Run, Unicycle Club, Chorus, Odyssey of the Mind, Student Council, and more.
For over four decades, W.B. Simpson has been an outstanding elementary school in the greater Dover area. With a special emphasis on using best practices in classroom instruction and promoting a positive school atmosphere, W.B. Simpson continues to be a special place for kids to grow and learn. We encourage you to see for yourself the dedicated teachers and smiling children’s faces that make up the Simpson family. Please feel free to contact either Mike Kijowski (Principal) or Jennifer Martin (Assistant Principal) to schedule a tour of the school, and to talk about your child’s future at W.B. Simpson Elementary School.
