National Blue Ribbon - Welch

Blue Ribbon Award

2024 National Blue Ribbon School

Maj. George S. Welch Elementary

"Welch Elementary celebrates being named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School with school spirit, recognition, and plenty of Rider pride!

It was a celebration to remember at Major George S. Welch Elementary as the school was formally recognized as a 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schoolone of only two schools in Delaware to receive the honor this year. The recognition, presented by Dr. Miklus and Mrs. Faircloth to principals Mr. Payne and Ms. O’Connell, highlighted the outstanding work of Welch’s educators, students, and families in fostering a culture of academic excellence and inclusion.

Adding to the celebration, the CRHS Drumline and Unified Cheerleaders brought the energy in full force—a moment that never fails to ignite school spirit. And it didn’t stop there. Players from the CRHS Baseball and Boys Lacrosse teams joined the festivities, connecting with students and sharing what it truly means to be a Hero both on and off the field. It was powerful to watch the younger students look up to these athletes as role models, reinforcing a message of leadership, hard work, and teamwork.

Another proud moment came as Mrs. Ashby was presented with the Delaware Unified Banner, recognizing Welch's commitment to inclusion and her leadership in creating meaningful opportunities for all students.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a Welch celebration without a little fun. As part of the fundraising success for Over the Edge, several students earned the chance to pie a teacher. It’s always a crowd favorite. The laughter, the surprise, the whipped cream—it never gets old. The kids rejoiced, and yes, the teachers were just as shocked as ever.

This recognition places Welch Elementary alongside other outstanding Caesar Rodney schools that have previously received the Blue Ribbon distinction, including Allen Frear Elementary (2011 and 2020), Nellie H. Stokes Elementary (2012), Star Hill Elementary (2014), W.B. Simpson Elementary (2015), and Dover Air Force Base Middle School (2016). These honors reflect the district’s ongoing commitment to student success, excellence in instruction, and a strong, supportive school community.
