About J. Ralph McIlvaine Early Childhood CenterThe Caesar Rodney School District has renovated and expanded the existing McIlvaine Early Childhood Center so that it will house all kindergarten students in the district, beginning in the 2009-2010 school year. Approximately 400 students zoned for Stokes, Simpson, Brown, Star Hill, and Allen Frear Elementary School will begin their educational journey at the "Home of the Littlest Riders" and will return to their home school for grades 1-5. The renovation and expansion of the school site (originally erected in 1934) has meant an increase from 6 to 22 classrooms and an increase in staffing from 16 to approximately 50 people. The staff at McIlvaine Early Childhood Center is considered a "torch bearer" in the field of early education and intervention. The school's work was profiled in the National Association of Elementary School Principal's publication Spotlight on Promising Practices for their annual Health and Safety Fair. Additionally, the school has been the recipient of the Delaware Department of Education's Parent Involvement Award and has received numerous grants to support literacy, the FISH philosophy, and parent outreach. It should also be noted that eleven different districts and charter schools throughout the state of Delaware have sent school teams to observe the work at McIlvaine. Great things are happening at the Home of the Littlest Riders!
